Central Auckland – Albert Park Keepers Cottage – Auckland Library – Visual Poetry Jam (19 July 2022)
Melissa Lee the lead youth librarian worked to bring us to the central library. We held the workshop in the Albert Park Keepers cottage. She stayed with us the full day experiencing the workshop for herself. The cottage was quaint and cosy and had lots of little rooms to have the students work with their monochromatic projects but the best part was the park itself with lots of scope to learn about composition, leading lines and framing.
There is structure but flexibility that is allowing for the students to experiment in the boundaries of the task, receive rapid feedback on their work, and then try again.
We started the day working on composition skills, then after lunch transitioned to monochromatic flat lays. Gave a demonstration of studio lighting and took portraits of the students and then ended with a workshop on lightroom for them to edit their imagery.
The students create images in the monochromatic segment that will be used in a national exhibition.
The students were exposed to composition techniques and then got a chance to practice their new way of seeing the world and got immediate feedback.
We worked with three librarians during the day who are keen to have us come back and run more workshops this time with schools during the school term.
Weather was lovely and we got a chance to do all that we set out to do.
